The cultural dance of Tahiti is very aerobic. This class is advanced in nature and designed to give the dancers the opportunity to learn a variety of Tahitian dance steps. This class will build upon basic technique. Training is both challenging and demanding. Focus is on perfection of technique, timing, precision and execution of technique. Dancers should be proficient with basic Tahitian before enrolling in the is class. This is a technique only class. This class is meant for SERIOUS dancers only.

Performing Team

Being on a performing team means team membership. Because we dance as a team, we depend on everyone to help make it be successful. Thinking like a team player will make your experience more enjoyable for you and for those around you. If someone lets us down, it hurts the whole team. Not only is good dancing important, but we also feel that being a good team member includes supporting the team. Dancers are expected to work hard at every practice, attend consistently, be punctual, dedicated, responsible, positive, and have great work ethics in order to achieve individual and team goals.

• TEAM AUDITIONS will be held in September.

• If your dancer makes Show Group A (Company or Jr. Elite & Elite Level Teams) the commitment is September-July.

• If your dancer makes Show Group B (Pre Teen, Jr. Varsity, Varsity level teams) the commitment is September-May.

• If your dancer makes the Promo Team the commitment is year round. Auditions held in June.

• Your child will be required to attend their weekly technique class, along with their scheduled weekly or monthly show practice.

• Often our performing teams are asked to participate in various community events
throughout the year. Full participation in each event is expected of each member. Team members are required to “TRY YOUR BEST” to be at ALL PERFORMANCES. Show Group A will have a maximum of 2 shows a month. Show Group B will have a maximum of 1 Show every other month.

• Our Team performances are run non-profit. Proceeds are invested back into supplies and equipment for future performances.

• Booster Club: This program will not run on its own. For this program to be successful, we also ask that parents do their part. We may need help with phone calls, costumes, fund raising activities, team parties, etc. Parents will be required to be a part of the Parent Booster Club.

• Parents please sit down and discuss this with your child (ren). If you choose to audition and make a team, it is a commitment for both parent and dancer(s), there is a contract that will need to be signed from the parent and dancer as well.

Performance Opportunities

Class Attire

ATTIRE: Island Style T-Shirt (or modest shirt), serong (spandex shorts underneath), rice belt (for Tahitian)

• Parents are responsible for purchasing or making their dancers’ class attire, recital and/or performing team costumes.

IMPLEMENTS: Students are required to purchase and bring their own implements and supplies each
week.

• You can purchase some of these supplies from “Island Style Dance Studio & Performing Company, L.L.C.” or Hula Supply by calling 1-888-635-HULA.

HULA BAG & BINDER: Students are required to bring their hula bag & binder to their classes each week.

Pick-up/Drop-off

Orem city zoning requirements strictly require a business in a residential neighborhood to “not generate more than two vehicular round trips related to the home occupation during any single hour.”

• WALKING STUDENTS: Students who are able to walk, and sign up as a “walking
student” must always walk to and from classes. Please do not, under any
circumstances drop off or pick up if you are a “walking student.”

• CARPOOL STUDENTS: We ask that students who live too far away and must drive
(or be driven) please carpool with others so that we will stay within our legal limit of
two cars per hour, and also make it possible for us to fill the limited class times.

• Commercial District Students: Students who are unable to
walk or car pool with another family are required to park or drop off & pick up in the
commercial district. The closest commercial district zone is located 2 blocks straight
down the street on 1800S which is the side street located between Xpedx and Glass
Images & Creation Inc. (Just past 543 E & 1800 S)

Make-up Policy

Prior notice of absence is required for all make-up classes. Missed classes must be
made up within a 30 day period. Tuition will not be credited, extended, or refunded
due to absences.

Holidays

We observe the same holidays as Alpine School District. If there is no school for Alpine School
District there is no “Hula” class.

Attendance

It is very important that students attend all classes. If it is necessary to miss a
class, please make sure to call to be excused.
NO VISITORS Parents may come to their child’s first class, after that we do not allow visitors
IN CLASS: (Friends or Family) to come and watch the class. We find the dancers are able to concentrate
better, bond with the teachers and assistants and classes are more productive when visitors
are not watching classes. You may come back the last five minutes of classes.

Tuition

Tuition is due by the first class of each month (for current month).

• A $15.00 late fee will be charged after the 10th of the month. A $25.00 service fee is charged on all returned checks.

• Students with accounts that are 30 days or older past due are dropped from the class, unless special arrangements are made.

•Monthly tuition will stay the same whether there are 3, 4, or 5 classes in the month.

• No refunds or credits will be given for missed classes.

Registration

$15.00 initial registration fee. $5.00 per year renewal fee, due every September.
Registration begins in July for classes running from September through May (Fall/Winter). Registration begins in February for summer classes (spring/ summer) and
workshops.

Intermediate Tahitian

This class will build upon the techniques learned in Intermediate Combo I. Adding to the implement skills, Kala`au and Ipu will be introduced. Dancers are taught choreography skills and basic teaching technique. Dancers are required to choreograph one Auana (modern) hula. The dancers are also required to teach their choreographed dances to a class assigned to them, the dancers are expected to be responsible and work hard in this class. They will assist in all areas of preparation required to put on our yearly recital. This class is recommended for serious dancers only.

Advanced Combo

This class is highly advanced in nature and designed to build upon the techniques learned in Intermediate Combo II. Training is both challenging and demanding. Focus is on perfection of technique, timing, precision and execution of technique and dance. In this class, the dancers are required to choreograph one Kahiko (ancient) hula. Dancers will then have the opportunity to teach their dance to the dancers in this class. The dancers are expected to show the type of respect for hula that comes with the knowledge. It is expected that the dancers be responsible and work hard. The dancers in this class will assist in all areas of preparation required to put on our yearly recital. This class is recommended for serious dancers only.

Adult Combo

This class is offered for adults who are interested in learning and/or improving upon Polynesian dance skills, while also getting an excellent aerobic workout. All implements will be taught in this class. Implements are required at each class.

Beginning Combo I

Dancers should be proficient at Pre-combo skills before enrolling on Beginning Combo I. This class will build upon the techniques learned in Pre-combo adding more advanced basics (technique). Boys will be introduced to more advanced spinning used in the “Samoan knife dance”. Class attire and all implements required at each class.

Beginning Combo II

This class will build upon the techniques learned in Beginning Combo I. Adding to the dancer’s implement skills; Ili-Ili’s (rocks) will be introduced. Class attire and all implements required at each class.

Intermediate Combo I

This class will build upon the techniques learned in Beginning Combo II. Focus will be placed on variations of the basics and perfecting skills previously learned. Uli-uli’s (feathered gourds) will be introduced. Dancers are also taught pre-choreographed skills and will be required to choreograph one Tahitian routine. At this level, dancers are encouraged to learn quickly and stay on task. Class attire and all implements required at each class. Boys will work on basic “Samoan slap dance” motions.

Island Style Creative Dance II

This class combines Creative Dance I skills with more exposure to Maori, Hawaiian and Tahitian dance techniques. Including short and long poi balls and Maori “ti ti toria” sticks. Some focus is placed on rhythm, tempo, and space. Class attire and implements required at each class. Boys will work on basic Haka technique and spinning used in the “Samoan knife dance”.

Pre-Combo

This class is an excellent foundation for anyone who is interested in Polynesian dance. Dancers will learn beginning Maori, Hawaiian and Tahitian basics including simple hand movements and what they mean, short and long poi balls, pu-ili (split bamboo sticks) and Maori “ti ti toria” sticks. Boys will work on basic Haka technique and spinning used in the Samoan knife dance”. Dancers will also learn basic choreographed routines. Class attire and implements required at each class.

Island Style Creative Dance I

This class focuses on natural movement and gross motor skills while gaining an understanding of some of the basics of Polynesian dance including long poi balls and Maori “ti ti toria” sticks. Dancers are introduced to simple hand movements and their meanings. Some fundamental techniques are taught, but children are encouraged to express their own creativity through movement. Class attire and implements required at each class. Boys will be introduced to basic Haka technique and spinning used in the “Samoan knife dance”.
